SENIOR GOLFERS SOCIETY OF QUEENSLAND LTD

Game 2, Monday 11 April 2022

PRESIDENT'S UPDATE - FULVIO TONIOTTI

Southport Golf Club was presented at its best, considering their course recovery from all the recent rain and the Autumn sunny weather allowed us to enjoy a tremendous day.

We also use these golf games to update our members with some of the key activities the committee wish to share, namely;

  • The wonderful success of the Mornington Peninsula Tour and the exciting announcement that the 2023 SGSQ tour will be held at Sydney's Northern Beaches from Sunday 17th to Saturday 23rd September. So pencil it in for another exciting Society event.
  • Unfortunately, the Queensland Seniors lost the coveted McIntyre Trophy held in Tasmania to a strong South Australia Society team. We fought hard given our hardy team of three members, and I would highly recommend you give some thought in attending the 2024 McIntyre which will be held in South Australia, with an outside chance of reclaiming the Candelabra!
  • As you may be already aware, we have an incoming South African Senior Golfers' Society Tour in Queensland between the 9th and 15th October. An exciting social and golfing program has been drafted with games at RQ, IGC, Brookwater and Hope Island. Our Queensland Society members will  be invited to attend with a tremendous opportunity to meet like-minded overseas Senior Golfers' Society members.
  • In 2023 we will see an incoming USA Senior Golfers' Society Tour from the 7th to the 13th March and an outgoing tour, with two Queensland allocations, to the UK commencing the 4th June 2023.
  • An extremely important announcement with a future communique will be released shortly, asking the Society members to review changes to our Constitution. These modifications will enable gender neutral wording to be approved at the year-end AGM. Any questions from our members may be shared through the committee.
  • Lastly, the much-revered Society Ties were presented to our new members attending the day - John Steffensen from Indooroopilly GC, John Griffin and Tony James from Royal Queensland GC. Welcome.

CAPTAIN'S CORNER - LES NATHANSON

A slightly reduced mixed field of 68 players assembled at Southport GC at 8:30 for our 9am Shotgun start, with separate 4BBB Men's and Women's competitions off the white and red tees, with five NTPs'.

A gorgeous sunny day with light ESE winds greeted us. Heavy rain and flooding of some of the course two weeks prior was barely noticeable, with the only legacy being some staked out-of-play bunkers and 90 degree motorised cart rule for the fairways. Good grass cover on the fairways minimised ball run and coupled with tight fairway lining by the trees kept scoring at bay. The Men's run down extended to 35 points, runners up on 43 were Ross Kelly and President Fulvio Toniotti. Clear winners on 48 points were Bill Yuille and Al Haydock with the lunchtime presentation explanation being that Bill's putter was really hot. Nearest to pins were: 2nd - Fulvio Toniotti, 7th John Walthall, 12th Peter Rowsell, 14th Peter white and 16th Les Nathanson.

The Women's rundown went to 34 points with runners up being Jan Leggett and Anne Yuille on 39 points with a countback to the Winners, Jill McTaggart and Di Dixon also on 39. No doubt a buoyant mood on the drive home for the Yuille's.

Nearest the Pins: 2nd Lisa Bruce, 14th Margaret Craigie and 16th Jenna Lyons.

The support from the Pro-shop and Catering staff was smooth and efficient.

The lunch options of Sandwich / Wrap or Salad were fresh and filling. Feedback generally is that next year we will return to a buffet style lunch which will offer more choice.

Overall, a very enjoyable day.

Next Game - Brisbane Golf Club, Monday 23rd May 9,00am Shotgun Start with separate comps for men and women.
