SENIOR GOLFERS' SOCIETY OF QUEENSLAND LTD

Supplement to the Supplement to the Autumn Newsletter

Upcoming events
The next event is at Bribie Island Golf Club this Friday, 7 July 2024, with 67 players nominated so far.

The event is a very popular fixture in our calendar, with golf and a sit down lunch to follow. Please contact the Captain at 0411 035 664 if you would like to play.

Then follow 2 "home" games and the annual tour. The annual tour is to the northern beaches of Sydney this year, from 17-23 September. It promises to be a terrific event with top rated golf courses on offer and some excellent social activities available. We have 59 tourists already with capacity for more. If you would like to participate please contact Robert Thatcher on 0418 752 970.

The following "away" game is at Toowoomba at the Middle Ridge Golf Club on 23 October.
Bruce Nicholls has organised another pre-game dinner, this time at the Burke and Wills Hotel for Sunday 22 October 2022. The pre-game dinner has proved very popular and numbers have outgrown the capacity of the previous venue. Attractive accomodation rates will also be available to members who would like to stay at the Burke and Wills as well.

2024 Tour and McIntyre
As promised I am now able to clarify the position in relation to next year's annual tour by the Queensland senior golfers (SGSQ), and the McIntyre event, both originally scheduled to be held in Adelaide on 7 to 13 April and 14 to 16 April respectively.

We were confidently advised by the organisers of the McIntyre event that it would be held a week earlier, commencing on 7 April (the weekend at the beginning of our tour as previously scheduled), as the AFL "Gather Round" was to start on 14 April and take place over the weekend at the end of our then scheduled tour. In light of that the SGSQ tour organisers started necessary planning to move the tour dates to 7-13 September to avoid conflict with the McIntyre event and the likely increase in airfare costs associated with thousands of sports fans departing from Adelaide after the "Gather Round". However, to the surprise of all concerned, the AFL then announced that the "Gather Round" would be held from 4-7 April 2024.

AFL locks in dates for gather round 2024

This prompted the organisers of the McIntyre event to return to the original schedule commencing on 14 April. Faced with the clash of dates with the "Gather Round", the prospect of accessing more tier one courses, and the likely increase in costs for participants in getting flights to Adelaide in April for the start of the tour, the SGSQ Committee, at its meeting last Friday, resolved to confirm the September dates for the annual tour.

Planning for the tour has further advanced and golf has been booked at Kooyonga Golf Course, The Grange Golf Course and Mt Compass Golf Course, and we are still waiting on a final response from Glenelg Golf Course. Where LIV lands in terms of an Adelaide fixture in 2024, since the negotiated settlement with the PGA, is not known at this point.

The selected tour hotel is now the new Crown Plaza in the Adelaide CBD, providing easier access to the excellent restaurants on offer in Adelaide. https://adelaide.crowneplaza.com

For the rest day, Wednesday, a wine tasting is being planned for McLaren Vale followed by lunch at The Star of Greece restaurant in Port Willunga with its superb ocean views and seafood menu. https://starofgreece.com.au

It sounds like a fabulous tour so please save the tour dates of 7-13 September 2024 in your diaries now. I would like to thank the organisers, Robert Thatcher and Ken Prosser, for their hard work in meeting the exigencies of the situation so creatively.

The McIntyre event details are now available as well and are set out below.

2024 Schedule
Another matter to note is that next year the SGSQ calendar will include a game at Nudgee Golf Club as it opens its 36 hole course. The Committee and Captain see it as important to provide members with variety in the events organised by the Society and, while the Noosa Springs event was very successful, considered Nudgee's development provided a further opportunity to do that. Please support these initiatives.
